Procrastination.
We're all guilty of it, the "It's an annoyance but it's not completely broken, so we'll deal with it for the time being" excuse to avoid fixing something that isn't behaving as it should, in my case the issue at hand is a Belkin 802.11G PCI card, more precisely, the drivers for them.
You see, the card in question loses the ability to talk to the network on a regular basis, it has nothing to do with signal strength, being that it has a 6dbi antenna and is positioned less than twenty feet from the Linksys WRT54GS base station which itself has a pair of 6dbi antennas and boosted transmit power, it just shrugs, gives up and goes "There's no network man, why'd you buy me if you don't have wireless?", nothing fixes it short of a swift sharp 'repair' in Windows, which amongst other things, restarts the adapter... It sadly doesn't resubmit your attempted bid to ebay, causing the loss of a pile of useless tat for £3.24 + shipping and handling
a different windows installation, on a different computer, and even a different card that wasn't even the same model, and still it continues to periodically lose the ability to speak wifi, which I'm told is somewhat like jive, only less cool.
Spending £10 on a new wireless card from another vendor to bypass what appears to be a driver issue would fix it..
So have I done that?
Well, yes, but it took me 18 months to get around to it.
I now await the arrival of an Asus 802.11G network card (my better instincts told me a linksys or 3com or such would be a better idea, but my cheapskate instinct won in the end.)
You may now all sit and anticipate the utter hilarity when the new card has the exact same issue and it's actually due to some esoteric checkbox hidden fifteen levels deep behind a filing cabinet in Windows... begin your anticipation... NOW!

It might be a good idea to post what the checkbox was for other people who might have a similar problem.
I mean we already know you hate windows, at least be useful
That's all well and good, except I didn't say it WAS a checkbox, I was pessimistically stating that it'd probably wind up being that now that I've spent money on replacement hardware.
Murphy's law and all that.
